About Tom Bull

Tom Bull (b 1995, Northamptonshire) works to explore the complexities of reading and making. Through moving image, photography, performance, drawing and sculpture, Tom’s works unfold a performative inquiry that is concerned with the tension, or slippage between fiction and representation, acting and being, form and sensitivity. Playing within pre-existing disciplines, such as model making, amateur dramatics, storytelling and self-portraiture, he explores the vulnerability of a work and how it requires support, or whether in its instilled fallibilities, it becomes inherently unsustainable, unable to anchor itself onto given points. Tom works within these convoluted environments, not just imitating life but working within it, for he does not seek answers to these ambiguities, instead he highlights them as well as their resultant anxieties, playing with them as a visual medium, giving them form and presence.

Tom is currently an MFA student at Goldsmiths, University of London. He graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins in 2018 and from 2018 to 2020 he was an artist in residence on the ACME Associate Studio Programme in London. Tom has exhibited in solo shows at Airspace Gallery, Five Hundred Thousand, 148 Mayall Road, as well as exhibiting alongside friends and fellow artists in The Lever Gallery, Bomb Factory, Tenderbooks, ArtLicks-Weekend, Protein Studios, TATE Switch house and Blitz Gallery.
