NN is delighted to launch the Northampton Multiverse season with a large-scale, site-specific new work by Pip & Pop. Pip & Pop is also known as the Australian artist Tanya Schultz, whose practise ranges from installation and painting to wall-work and sculpture. Pip & Pop grew from her long-term collaboration with fellow artist Nicole Andrejevic and Tanya has continued their practice to create ever-more ambitious worlds. She works using fine sand, sugar, origami, plastic figures, glitter, lights and found objects to create intricate, gloriously technicoloured worlds.

Margaret Cavendish’s 1666 forerunner of science fiction, The Blazing World, forms the starting point for Tanya’s research. Cavendish imagines an alternate world and utopia that the Northampton-based graphic novelist Alan Moore referenced as a setting for part of his graphic novel series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Both of these works inform Pip & Pop’s immersive installation at NN that also draws from folk stories, animations from other cultures as well as video games, ancient maps and ideas of promise.
