2-7 September, NNCA Project Space, Vulcan Works.
Melissa Stewart and Kinga Kulczyc, were BA Fine Art studio tenants who influenced each other throughout the final year of their degree. Both of their practices inform similar themes such as transience, residue and record. Both of them define their artworks as thresholds using veils and skins to record traces of presence and time. The duo exhibition informs the close relationship between body and space.
The exhibition will celebrate the distinctive bond between artists, forged through shared environment and creative endeavours. This show offers a chance to revisit and reflect on their practices, while reshaping their work through a collaborative curation process. An informal opening will be held on Thursday 5 September, 6-8pm.
Melissa Stewart
‘My artwork delves into the exploration of thresholds and the liminal, where the everyday transforms into the extraordinary. Doors, as cultural symbols of thresholds, embody connection, disconnection, and endless possibilities. They stand as silent sentinels between here and there, the known and unknown, life and death. This work isn’t just about barriers; it’s about the ambiguous spaces in between.’
Kinga Kulczyc
‘My work delves into the universal experience of nostalgia, and the invention of tradition, inspecting how it interweaves with the natural life cycle of customs and faith. By exploring the ways in which cultural practices evolve, persist, or fade over time, my work explores concepts around emotional resonance and the significance these traditions hold in our collective memory.’ Kinga is also the recipient of this year’s NN Prize.
